‘The King’ Richard Petty
Known to many simply as “The King,” NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty is the most decorated driver in the history of NASCAR. With a record number 200 career race wins and seven Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Championships during his illustrious career, there is a reason he wears the crown.
One may think that after 1,184 races that spanned three decades, “The King” would bow out and retire quietly. But, that’s just not Petty’s style. Today, he is as busy as ever and spends much of his time overseeing the operations of Richard Petty Motorsports, a race team competing at NASCAR’s highest level, as well as Petty’s Garage high performance speed shop.
Off the track, Petty’s legacy continues to shine bright. There is no other driver in NASCAR’s history to have made more of an impact on the sport than the Level Cross, N.C. native. He has been elected to the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame, International Motorsports Hall of Fame, North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame, and also the North Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. He also serves as Chairman of the North Carolina Motorsports Association and is an inaugural inductee in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
It’s hard to miss Petty in his signature cowboy hat and sunglasses signing autographs for fans or just lending a helping hand. In fact, Petty is also a leader in philanthropic efforts. Petty was instrumental in the development of the Victory Junction after donating 84 acres of his own land, on which the camp sits today. Founded in 2004, Petty is still extremely active at the camp, which gives chronically ill children the chance to experience life-changing camping experiences in a safe and medically-sound environment. He also is the co-founder of the Petty Family Foundation.
Bubba Wallace enters the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series as both a trendsetter and record-breaker. Wallace will compete for Rookie of the Year honors behind the wheel of the famed No. 43 led by co-owner “The King” Richard Petty and with veteran Crew Chief Drew Blickensderfer.
Wallace, 24, joins RPM after three seasons in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and two in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, where he is a six-time winner. In 2017, Wallace filled in for the injured Aric Almirola in the No. 43 Cup entry and finished 11th in his final start at Kentucky Speedway.
Wallace first burst onto the NASCAR scene in 2010, winning two NASCAR K&N Pro Series events. In his first full NCWTS season in 2013, Wallace turned heads with a victory at one of the circuit’s toughest tracks: Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. The young driver led 96 of 200 laps on the way to his first NASCAR National Series win, becoming the first African-American to win a NASCAR race on the national level in nearly 50 years.
Born in Mobile, Ala., Wallace and his family moved to North Carolina for his father’s work when he was just two years old. His interest in racing began by chance at the age of nine when his father purchased a motorcycle and took it in to a shop for improvements. The gentleman at the shop invited the family to a go-kart race. When Darrell, Sr. asked Darrell, Jr. if he’d like to give it a shot, he responded “yes” and was quickly hooked.
Wallace has also previously played basketball. He has become an accomplished photographer and frequently displays his talents through his Twitter (@bubbawallace) and Instagram (@bubbawallace) accounts. He enjoys paintball and gaming. He currently resides in Davidson, N.C.
